Our Mongolia retreat takes you deep into two dramatically different landscapes, staying in private ger camps far from the usual tourist trail. First, we head into the rocky, treeless steppe of the East Gobi, before travelling north to the rivers, wildflower meadows and forested hills of the Khan Kentii wilderness.

We begin in Ulaanbaatar, with a visit to a Mongolian cashmere factory to see how one of the country’s most famous exports is sourced and made, and learn more about the work being done to produce cashmere responsibly in Mongolia.

Then the adventure begins. We board two private Cessna Caravan aircraft for the one-hour flight south-east into the East Gobi Desert biome. Leaving Ulaanbaatar behind, the landscape opens beneath us before we land on the treeless Gobi steppe, surrounded by the rocky uplands of Ikh Nart.

We spend three nights here, with yoga and meditation in our spacious ger studio and plenty of time out in the landscape. We’ll hike with a local herder through rocky outcrops and open steppe, looking for wildlife and learning about life in this remote part of Mongolia. On another day, we head further into the Gobi to explore sand dunes, ancient burial sites and the surrounding wilderness, keeping watch for the animals that inhabit this seemingly empty landscape.

Towards evening, we make our way to a rocky viewpoint as the sun drops across the Gobi. We’ll stay out here for dinner around the campfire, with meditation and, once darkness falls, a sky almost completely untouched by artificial light. On a clear night, the Milky Way stretches overhead and shooting stars are not unusual.

From the Gobi, we travel overland by jeep to our second camp in the Khan Kentii wilderness. The landscape changes completely. Here, rivers wind through broad green valleys, wildflowers cover the meadows and forested hills rise on either side. Nomadic families live across this region with their horses, yaks and sheep, and there are few permanent roads or settlements.

We spend five nights here, giving us time to settle into a slower rhythm after the journey across Mongolia. Each day includes a guided hike into the surrounding wilderness, with different routes taking us along rivers, through forests and across the open valley. Experienced riders can also explore on horseback with local herders, while those who prefer to stay on foot can simply enjoy having this extraordinary landscape on the doorstep.

Yoga and meditation continue throughout our time here, alongside a daily session in our riverside ger sauna. Heat up inside the wood-fired sauna, step outside into the cool air, then walk straight down to the river for a cold-water dip. Our massage therapist also travels with us, with treatments available to book during your stay.

This is not a retreat where you stay in one beautiful hotel for a week. It is a journey across Mongolia. There are long drives, remote camps, limited connectivity and days when getting from one extraordinary place to another is part of the experience. In return, you get to travel through two remarkable corners of the country, meet some of the people who live here and experience Mongolia on a scale that is difficult to grasp until you are standing in the middle of it.
