James Rafael

James is a yoga, somatics, and qigong teacher. He has been practicing since 2009 and counts S. N. Goenka, Mimi Kuo-Deemer, Jean Hall, Mark Coleman, Martin Aylward, Tara Brach and Charlotte Joko Beck amongst his teachers. He leads teacher trainings and workshops internationally and teaches in London and online via his platform. Having read English at Cambridge University, James is passionate about the importance of inclusive language, mindful communication, the power of poetry, and creating queer-inclusive, progressive spaces to learn and practice in.

Typically, his yoga classes are a fluid, flowing sequences of postures which are linked through breath and attention. James is an alignment focused teacher, so there is a focus on staying in poses for longer, breathing deeply and finding optimal, healthy alignment. His practice is fused with the rich philosophies and narratives of numerous cultures and traditions.

His qigong sessions (pronounced chee-gong) combine fluid, slow, circular movements with static postures and visualisations. Qigong is a Chinese energy cultivation practice with roots in Daoist and Buddhist beliefs and traditions. The practices ultimately work toward creating greater balance and harmony, and an overall sense of health, vitality and wellbeing. The practice can be gentle and soft, or strong and fiery, depending on what best promotes health and nourishment at the time.
