Located on the remote and captivating island of Sumba, our retreat location is a beach front resort set on the pristine white sands of Dassang Beach, where crystal-clear waters meet a truly off-the-beaten-path sanctuary. Surrounded by nature and rooted in ancient culture, our retreat is nestled on a lush 100-hectare reserve within the ancestral lands of the Marapu people. Here, you’ll have the opportunity not just to unwind, but to connect — with the island, with yourself, and with traditions that run deep. From sacred site visits to horseback rides through untamed landscapes, this is far more than just another beach escape.
Throughout the week, you’ll practise with one of London’s most respected yoga teachers, Jean Hall. Known for her strong, soulful slow flow, Jean guides two sessions each day that weave together yoga, somatics, breath awareness and meditation. Her teaching offers a spacious, embodied practice — balancing strength and softness, movement and stillness — all in harmony with your natural surroundings.
Mornings begin quietly, perhaps with sunrise on the beach, followed by yoga and a nourishing breakfast. The rest of the day is yours — to soak up the sun, explore the island, or practising the art of doing nothing! For those who want to stay active, bicycles, paddleboards, tennis and volleyball are available. Surf lovers will find uncrowded waves right outside their villa and can head out by boat to nearby breaks or book lessons. Massages and wellness treatments can be arranged at your leisure.
One of Sumba’s most unforgettable experiences is swimming with horses — a tradition deeply woven into local culture. Revered by the Sumbanese, horses are more than companions; they’re part of the spiritual fabric of life here. Guided by our local community partners, you’ll have the chance to connect with these animals and the traditions they represent, whether through a swim, a ride, or a quiet moment of presence.
The week also includes opportunities to dive deeper into Sumbanese culture. Through thoughtfully curated experiences, you’ll be able tio visit local villages to learn about ancient practices like ikat weaving, natural dyeing, and traditional crafts — fostering meaningful connection and understanding.
Mid-week, we’ll venture together to the Lapopu Waterfall — a stunning canyon oasis where the waters from Matayangu cascade into turquoise pools. It’s the perfect place for a peaceful swim and a moment of stillness beneath the canopy.
If you’re looking for something real — untamed beauty, deep rest, soulful movement, and the magic of a place that still feels undiscovered and the rest of the world feels far away – this retreat is for you.
Who's Teaching: Jean Hall

Jean teaches a strong, soulful slow flow form of yoga. She is known for her unique creative sequencing of postures which helps to draw students and teachers safely beyond limitations and closer to their true potential and confidence through the ancient yogic system of asanas, mindful breathing and meditation with an approach of devotion and playfulness.
You’ll have a 2 hour morning practice where breath work/pranayama unfolds into a fluid movement and dynamic yoga asana flow to awaken, invigorate and cleanse. Your evening practice will be 1.5 hours of gentle, calming and healing with yin and restorative poses, inversions, meditation and deep relaxation (yoga nidra).

You’ll be served a predominantly vegetarian menu on this retreat, with some fish options available. Meals take place at our restaurant near the sea, where our chefs prepare a nourishing and satisfying brunch and dinner each day, inspired by the island’s flavours. If you’d also like to order lunch, this can be arranged at an additional cost.
Our local chefs work closely with farmers in the area to source seasonal fruit and vegetables, grown both on the hotel grounds and in nearby communities. Their approach to food is rooted in sustainability — celebrating local ingredients and showing how living off the land can go hand-in-hand with a high-quality dining experience.
If you have any dietary requirements or allergies, please contact us before booking, as we’ll need to check with our chefs to confirm whether we can accommodate your needs.
Please note: this is an alcohol-free retreat.
This retreat is designed for the Venture Traveller — someone who seeks out meaningful experiences, loves to explore at a gentle pace, and is curious about places far from the mainstream. It will take a long time to get there — multiple flights, a layover or two, and a final journey to the island’s remote coast. But that distance is part of what makes it so special. You’ll stay in comfort, but the real luxury is space — space to move, breathe, connect with nature, and dive into a different rhythm of life. If you love the idea of soulful yoga, wild beaches, cultural connection and the freedom to do as much (or as little) as you like — Slow Island Sumba is your kind of retreat.
