Our journey begins on Ishigaki Island, part of the remote Yaeyama archipelago in Okinawa Prefecture—Japan’s far south, where coral reefs fringe jungle-covered islands and time moves a little differently. This isn’t the Japan you see in guidebooks. It’s a wilder, more elemental version—salt-washed and sunlit, full of gentle wonder and unexpected depth.
We are based in Shiraho, a small coastal village known for its traditional houses and rare blue coral reef. Our retreat home is a beautifully restored 19th-century merchant house, just a minute’s walk from the beach. Nestled in a traditional fishing and farming village the house blends timeless wooden architecture with peaceful gardens, shaded decks, and simple, comfortable rooms.
Life here is slow and soothing. Start your mornings with a swim at sunrise, then settle into your daily yoga practice with Katarina. This is an immersive retreat led by one of the UK’s most experienced yoga teachers. Morning sessions will energise and prepare you for the day ahead, while evening practices will help you unwind and ease into a restful night’s sleep.
During the day, you’ll snorkel in luminous waters, visit neighbouring Taketomi Island with its preserved Ryukyu heritage, and spend an unforgettable day exploring nearby Iriomote—canoeing through quiet mangrove forests, then hiking through lush jungle to a hidden waterfall where you can cool off with a swim.
Each night, there’s the chance to stargaze beneath the vast subtropical sky. Ishigaki is known for its dark skies and dazzling constellations—so prepare to be amazed as you lie back under a canopy of stars.
For the last two days of our retreat, we travel north to Honshu for a complete shift in landscape and energy. Here, in the sacred shadow of Mount Fuji, we stay at a forested boutique hotel. You’ll soak in traditional onsen baths, enjoy a BBQ dinner under the stars, and hike part of Fuji’s historic pilgrim trail to a mountaintop shrine. This part of the retreat connects you to Japan’s spiritual roots, where mountains are gods and silence is sacred.
Traditional Japanese meals throughout are nourishing and thoughtful—local flavours, seasonal ingredients, and time to truly savour. There’s no rush here, only space to reconnect with yourself and the world around you.
If you’re seeking a retreat where wild nature meets mindful practice—this retreat offers a rare chance to experience Japan in its most awe-inspiring forms.

Katarina is a 500hr E-RYT (Experienced – Registered Yoga Teacher), trained in Ashtanga, Rocket, Mandala Vinyasa, Yin, Prenatal Yoga and Breathwork & Meditation. You can expect a dynamic and challenging class in the morning sessions. The afternoon sessions will be yin yoga to help you relax and recover at the end of your adventurous day.
Katarina will be teaching a welcome Vinyasa flow on the first evening, meditation followed by Mandala Vinyasa on the first 4 mornings covering the 4 elements, Air, Fire, Water and Earth and a farewell Rocket class on the final morning.
Classes are suited for all levels but you’ll enjoy them more if you are relatively fit and have tried a flow class before.Your classes will be 90 minutes long.

We have space for 12 guests on this retreat. In Ishigaki, you’ll stay in a beautifully preserved traditional Japanese house with four twin rooms and one quad room. The accommodation is simple and authentic, offering small, peaceful sleeping spaces and a true taste of Japanese living.
Downstairs, you’ll find generous communal areas, two garden terraces, and a tranquil engawa—a covered wooden veranda perfect for quiet moments. The whole house is ours, creating a calm and private atmosphere. Wi-Fi is available throughout.
Each guest room has a private toilet and shower and you’ll sleep on futons laid over tatami mats, in the style of traditional Japanese homes. All rooms include air conditioning and a fan, along with essentials such as a hairdryer, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, hand soap, tissues, and mosquito coils.
Later in the retreat, we move to the foothills of Mt Fuji, where we’ll stay in twin-bed cabins at a stylish modern glamping site. While we’ll be sharing the site with others, we have our own large deck space for yoga, dining, and gathering. The cabins feature comfortable beds and ensuite bathrooms with everything you need for a cosy and restful stay.
On this retreat you’ll be eating delicious, traditional Japanese food. If you have not been to Japan previously, you may find some of the dishes unfamiliar. Our chefs are wonderful and the food is amazing but do be prepared to be adventurous!
In Japan, dietary requirements such as vegetarianism and kosher, along with a number of other food-related problems such as coeliac disease, are not widely understood nor catered for. Consequently, we are unable to provide strict vegetarian, vegan or gluten free meals because almost all stock (the base for soups and sauces) contains gluten, meat or fish products, and vegetables, if prepared as tempura, are fried in the same oil as meat and fish.
If you have specific dietary needs, please do contact us here BEFORE you book this retreat so we can check if we are able to cater for you.
This is an alcohol free retreat.
This retreat is for our Bold Travellers*
This journey is for the adventurous, open-minded yogi. It’s a long way to travel, and there will be jet lag—but if you’re up for the challenge, the rewards are unforgettable.
We’ll be staying in simple, authentic accommodation—sleeping on traditional tatami floor mattresses and enjoying fresh, local Japanese food. This is a chance to fully immerse yourself in Japan’s unique culture, customs, and rhythms of daily life.
Our schedule is full and active, with snorkelling, kayaking, and hiking all part of the experience. You’ll need a reasonable level of fitness and confidence in the water, as swimming is essential for some of our adventures.
If you’re looking for comfort and predictability, this may not be the right fit. But if you’re ready to embrace the unknown, stretch yourself, and be moved by Japan’s wild beauty and spiritual depth—this retreat was made for you.

Responsible retreating in Japan
We are committed to operating in an environmentally and socially responsible way which includes being transparent about the current eco-credentials for each retreat. The carbon emissions for travelling to Japan are high, so this retreat uses up a big portion of our carbon budget each year. In Japan we work with local partners and small businesses and we are noticing an improvement in these scores each year. This retreat is for sure a work in progress and while there is plenty of room for improvement, there are also a lot of positive impacts to celebrate.
