We’ll be based in the small fishing town of Stykkishólmur, often described as a living museum thanks to its beautifully preserved historic houses and working harbour. The town sits on Breiðafjörður Bay, a wide, island-filled bay surrounded by mountains and renowned for its natural beauty and marine life.
You’ll stay in two small boutique hotels on the harbour, directly opposite one another. Both are distinctive historic buildings with curved roofs, carefully renovated to a modern boutique standard. Interiors blend contemporary design with original character, and rooms are small but bright, comfortable, and thoughtfully equipped, offering a calm and practical base between days out in the landscape.
We begin our journey on arrival in Iceland with a soak at Sky Lagoon, located just outside ReykjavÃk. This oceanfront geothermal experience is the perfect way to unwind after travel and gently transition into the rhythm of the retreat.
Once in West Iceland, mornings begin with the option to visit the local swimming pools, a much-loved part of Icelandic daily life. Yoga takes place in a beautiful, spacious, fully equipped studio located just next door to our accommodation. Our yoga will be led by Victoria Greene whose love for the landscapes of Iceland inspires the daily practices. Her class style cultivates energy and appreciation for the day ahead with a gentle nudge toward contemplation and self-reflection.
Over the course of the retreat, you’ll experience a series of guided activities that connect you deeply with this region. We’ll explore nearby islands on a boat trip out into Breiðafjörður Bay, spend time visiting small coastal towns, and visit the iconic mountain Kirkjufell, one of Iceland’s most recognisable natural landmarks. We’ll also take a whale-watching trip from ÓlafsvÃk.
On land, we’ll walk up Helgafell, considered sacred by many locals. Tradition says that if you climb the hill without looking back, make a wish at the top, and descend without turning around, your wish may come true.
Another highlight is a dedicated spa visit to Krauma, where naturally heated water from Europe’s most powerful hot spring is blended with cold glacial water to create perfectly balanced soaking pools. There is a sauna, steam room, cold plunge, and a beautiful relaxation room. This is a deeply relaxing experience and a natural complement to the yoga and time outdoors.
Midway through the retreat there is a gentler day, giving you space to rest or explore Stykkishólmur at your own pace. You might visit local museums, wander the harbour, or simply enjoy the slower rhythm of the town. For those who would like to add more activity, optional experiences such as kayaking in the fjord or horse riding can be arranged at an additional cost.
Autumn in West Iceland brings crisp air, softer light, and far fewer visitors. There is also a good chance of seeing the northern lights on clear evenings. This retreat offers the chance to experience a peaceful, authentic part of Iceland that many travellers never reach.
